NEW NEWS CHANNEL
Well folks I am back and I know that many of you really miss my regular column in the Guardian, which sadly closed and very quickly last month after many years as a newspaper in our area and serving Briton Ferry. This regular column Hugh's News will appear every month with updated information each week and your news and all about Briton Ferry. You can either email this site or visit the Briton Ferry Town Council website, which is http://britonferrycouncil.org.uk
NEARLY FLOODED
Last weekend saw some of the heaviest rain we have experienced for some time. Driving down through the parts of Briton Ferry that is hotspots for flooding, Victoria and Regent Street drains were taking the deluge of water. Water was gathering in both subways, Regent Street and Church Street leading to Villiers Street. The worse threat was by the Spar on the main road that had to be closed and by the Lodge Flats. After an early alert from residents the Fire Brigade was on the scene backed up by NPT council emergency vehicles. The water just poured down Ynysmaerdy Road and leading to the streets and Rockingham Terrace. Without doubt if the rain and gale force wind has continued some properties would have been flooded. Without doubt if the work already carried out by Welsh Water had not been carried out in the old lower part of the town, we would have been under floodwater. On this occasion, there were slim severe weather warnings from the met office. Falling leaves and even some trees and bushes in the wake of the storm did not help. The Briton Ferry website normally carries any severe weather and flood warnings to alert the people of Briton ferry and the various back up services to stand by.
ROAD AND URBAN PROGRAMME
The work on the street resurfacing programme is well under way in Briton Ferry. Ofcourse it is good to see streets and side roads not resurfaced for many years and some well overdue work on pavements. Streets and roads not yet resurfaced like George's Row and Wern Bank will be tackled in the next round of the programme. More on this again.
SUPPORT THE BUSES
At the last PACT meeting held in Cwrt Sart School, issues were raised about the buses having difficulty in getting past parked cars parked on bus routes and causing heavy delays. I know that parking is always a problem and we all know there are three cars to some houses. Part of it is common sense when we need buses to clear on routes that they use. This has been one of the issues with the service to Hen Gwrt.
REMEMBERANCE SERVICE
This coming Sunday, November 8 starting at 2.30 for 3.00pm at St Mary's Church, Llansawel, Church Street. The service will be attended by civic leaders, local schools and a high profile attendance by the Army, supported by the local sea cadets and other groups. The parade will move from St Mary's Church after the service via Church Street, Regent Street to the main road and the cenotaph for the laying of poppies and supported by Briton Ferry Silver Band. Let's hope that the weather is kinder than last year. This year's civic service will be conducted by Canon Stephen Ryan, the area Dean.
LIGHTS ON FOR CHRISTMAS
The Briton Ferry Town Christmas lights will be switched on by town Mayor Hugh James and accompanied by Father Christmas and elf helpers, with the support of the old fire brigades. Date planned is Friday November 20 and I will confirm this when I update the column.
BRUNEL DVD IS COMPLETED
I new DVD produced for the Brunel Dock Group has just been completed by local film producer Jason May. The DVD is based on how Brunel was invited to Briton Ferry to undertake his project in the early 1850's by local business people. Members of the Briton Ferry Musical Theatre and Briton Ferry Little Theatre and the support of the local library were involved. The DVD is narrated by Hugh James.
EVENTS IN BRITON FERRY
There are may organisations and events here in Briton Ferry and I will be delighted if you can give me information on the many events planned and especially over Christmas.
SCHOOLS AS WELL
I will be reporting on schools activities in all our schools and for their build up events to Christmas. I know that all schools have various events planned and involving the community.
HAPPY 90
Congratulations this week to Mrs Gladys Greener from Shelone Road, who is 90 years old.
CRIME NUMBER
Don't forget that the crime number to call rather than the emergency 999 is 101.
